Gulf Coast Synod
Priorities: Connection. Communication. Compassion.
by Bishop Tracey Breashears Schultz
September 18 through December 4, 2025, I
made stops in all seven of our conferences on what I called
my “Bishop’s Listening & Learning Tour.” An average
of 32 people attended each of the conference gatherings. In
December and January, I compiled the feedback I had received

They’re the three words you see in the title of this article,
and they’ve become our mission priorities: Connection. Communication. Compassion.
On January 9-10, 2026, the Synod Council
met in retreat at Lutherhill to learn about and discuss these
three ministry areas. Here are some of our notes.

Getting to Know the
Gulf Coast Synod: One Conference at a Time
by The Rev. Cassandra Nagle
leaders in the Gulf Coast Synod. At
first, I wasn’t sure how this would take shape. But, in what
seems like no time at all, my calendar has become filled with
all sorts of visits — with faith communities in transition,
with rostered ministers in discernment, with councils and
call committees in need of accompaniment or training, and
more.
This is a map of the seven conferences
in the Gulf Coast Synod. Which conference is your faith
community’s home? Each week, I am traveling to different
conferences in our synod (and sometimes more than one!), and
what a wonderful journey it has been so far.
