2025 Synod Assembly with Bishop Election

by Bishop Michael Rinehart

The 2025 Gulf Coast Synod Assembly was held in New Orleans under the theme Sing a New Song!. The last time we were in New Orleans for assembly was 2010. In 2014, we were in Baton Rouge. In 2020, we were scheduled to be in New Orleans, but of course the pandemic led to the cancellation of that assembly.

Opening worship Thursday night, May 15, was held at Christ Church Cathedral thanks to Episcopal Bishop Shannon Duckworth and The Very Reverend David duPlantier, Dean. I presided. Bishop Sue Briner from the Southwestern Texas Synod preached. Vicar John Pérez assisted. Music was led by the jazz group of JasonJason Percle, Jr., the Music Director at Grace Lutheran Church in New Orleans, and by Jarrett R Follette, the organist at Christ Church Cathedral.

Sing a New Song: New Orleans Campus Ministry

by Pastor Anders Nilsen

My name is Anders Nilsen, and I am currently serving as the chaplain at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, which is the campus ministry supporting Tulane and Loyola Universities here in New Orleans, and it is so great to be with you all in the Gulf Coast Synod and back with my Lutheran siblings. I bring greetings from the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and from my bosses Bishop Shannon Duckworth and the Canon to the Ordinary (which is a fancy, Episcopal way of saying “The Assistant to the Bishop”), the Rev. Morgan MacIntire. Know that your colleagues in the Episcopal Church here in New Orleans are praying for all of us as we are in this time of transition of leadership in the bishop’s office.

As I start I also want to say a word of thanks to Bishop Mike and to Bishop-elect Tracey. A little over a year ago when we found out that my wife matched for a medical fellowship at LSU here in New Orleans, I was anxious about what that might mean for a potential call as a Pastor in the ELCA. Coming from a first call in Minnesota, where there are more Lutheran churches in every city than Starbucks in Seattle, to a second call in Virginia Beach which has a pretty strong Lutheran presence, to New Orleans where people ask if Lutherans are Christians, I was anxious. Bishop Mike and Bishop-elect Tracey were so helpful in my search and call process. Thank you both for your encouragement and welcome into your synod.
