Hurricane
Relief Trip
The
Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the ELCA is going to North
Carolina to support communities there recover from the effects of
hurricanes in 2024. The need is great, and we are called to help
our neighbors.
About the trip: We will
leave Houston, March 8, early morning, travel to New Orleans, pick
up folks and travel in rented vans to a congregation in Atlanta,
where we will stay the night. On March 9, we’ll continue to ELCA
camp Luther Ridge in North Carolina arriving around noon. From
March 10-13, we will partner with Lutheran Disaster Response to
support the community in recovery and rebuilding efforts. LDR will
supply us with tools and sites while we are there. Then on Friday,
March 14, we will depart North Carolina and return to New Orleans,
with folks continuing on to Houston staying overnight at Peace
Slidell. On Saturday, March 15, those continuing to Houston will
leave NOLA and return to the Houston Area.
How much will it cost?
We request a suggested donation of $500 to Houston Campus Ministries. Please
select the "North Carolina 2025 Hurricane Relief Mission
Trip" fund to donate to OR they can leave a note in the memo
saying that the payment is for the "NC Hurricane Relief
Trip". A $75 non-refundable deposit is due by 2/15.
If you are not able to go but want to support someone attending the
trip, your donation is greatly appreciated. If you need help with
the minimum donation, please contact Pastor Laura Stephenson.
What kind of work will we be doing?
Mostly mucking out homes and buildings and gutting them for new
construction.
What about food? Our
host camp will be providing our meals, but if you would like to
bring money for snacks on the road or bring snacks you may. We can
accommodate most dietary restrictions.
What if I get hurt?
Only people over 18 may come on this trip. We ask participants to
wear appropriate personal protective gear throughout the trip as
guided by common sense and our hosts. We also ask participants to
have appropriate insurance coverage for medical needs should they
arise. The participating organizations do not assume liability for
any accident, event, or illness including death. Please plan to
wear closed toe and heal shoes the entire time we are on the trip.
What do I need to bring?
Since our hosts are supplying tools, food and a bed we ask that you
bring closed toed and heeled shoes, sturdy long pants, and weather
appropriate clothes. You will also need to bring your own bedding.
The beds we'll be on are twin bunk beds. Please also bring
medications, medical devices, personal care items, and your
emergency contact information.
We're excited you are going on this mission trip and will hold you
in prayer before, during, and upon returning. God is up to
wonderful things!
