Sunday School in Worship & Beyond

Sunday School brings back fond memories for me from the picturesque white church on the prairie in North Dakota. Adults drinking coffee while volunteers curtained off tables for make shift Sunday School “rooms” in the basement of the church will always remind me of the faithful love and care this church of farmers gave to me. I long for children to feel the grace of God as deeply as I was fortunate to experience. And yet, we live in different times. Challenges face young families that even I didn’t face when my kids were little. We long to offer meaningful experiences such as the one I had but we aren’t sure what to do.

The two congregations I serve in the western part of the synod have struggled with various models of Sunday School for several years. People are tired. The effort is sometimes rewarded with the presence of a kid or two. Sometimes nobody comes at all. In the spirit of experimentation, we are trying something that the whole congregation can benefit from – Sunday School as part of worship! During the Zoom event sponsored by the Youth Ministry Task Force on November 21 at 6:30pm, I will share what led to this experiment, what we have learned, and brainstorm with folks how this may work for other congregations and I hope to learn a few things from you as well. If nothing else, check out this format and see what the Holy Spirit stirs up for you!
